James O Hanlon, born 4/12/1899 at 140 Upper Dorset Street. Moved to a number of addresses with his family until they settled in 10 Innisfallen Parade.
Joined Fianna Eireann but was suspended for (messing?) a short time before the 1916 Rising. His friends called him to come into the GPO with them but he would not until Con Colbert would withdraw his suspension. This did not happen so he went home. Interned in Ballykinlar (1921) during the War of Independence, member of Four Courts Garrison during the Civil War. Imprisoned in Mountjoy and the Curragh during 1922 & 1923.
During the '30s he was a close associate of Seán Russell, gave instruction in explosives and worked on their development, broadcast on the Republican Radio. He was known as the paxo king because of his expertise with this explosive. As the IRA splintered and weakened he rose to the position of QMG. Amongst those he knew and equipped for the bombing campaign in England was Brendan Behan. Interned in the Curragh. Jailed in March 1941 for membership and possession. His sentence was 5 years penal servitude in Mountjoy.
After release joined a co-operative who built a block of 6 houses on Collins Avenue, into one of which he moved 1/11/50. The co-op members were all tradesmen who went to the site every evening and weekend after their normal work to build their new home. They got a dispensation from Sunday observance.
Worked for Jones, of Stephen's Green for about 40 years when he was sacked (as was his father from the same company after a similar length of service). Went into the Board of Works and worked in the National Library and Leinster House until his retirement aged 70. Enjoyed good health but suffered from Alzheimers disease for a number of years before his death 16/8/86
